Our mantra is "family first", says Rick Fessenbecker, managing director of Northwoods Software. "Mantra" however, may be an understatement for this family friendly company.
Mark Youngquist, business development manager, recently appealed a decision made by his insurance company regarding medical treatment for his nine-year-old twin sons. Though his policy was supposed to cover it, the treatment would have to be delayed three months until the dispute was resolved.
Younquist says the human resources and benefits administrator came to him and said, "We don't want you to delay three months. If worse comes to worst, we will cover the cost for you if the insurance doesn't cover it."
Fessenbecker explains that this family-first mantra makes good business sense. "In our industry, the attraction and retention of highly skilled, highly sought-after professionals is key to our success. We attempt to become a destination for people. "We've found that the kind of people that stick around and give their heart and soul also value family. The two are compatible. It helps us retain the very best in the industry."
